An unbelievable page turner - Once I had finished the book I realised that no other author could have got away with a similar plot with so many unanswered questions! It goes to show that Richard Laymon was one of the cleverest, probably the greatest author of his kind ever! Certainly no other writer that I have read can ever match the characters that Mr. Laymon produced. His descriptive prowess produced images that not even a High Density Sony 50 inch television could match. Once you have considered that plot is ridiculous, and the game MOG plays with Jane is entirely improbable you may consider that the book not worthy of your time. But once the first chapter has been completed the book is impossible to put down. Mr. Laymon could write about any subject and turn it into a best seller!
Great but not without its faults. - Another great book from Laymon,it`s not as gory as some of his work but had an interesting story to tell, but he never really tells the reader how Mog managed to get into her house or why he picked her to play the `Game`.The ending also seemed abit rushed but overall in his collection of books it merits a read now and again.
Classic Laymon - I started reading In The Dark as soon as I got it, I couldn t put it down.Gripping stuff that I really enjoyed - until the ending. We had a suspensepage turner that was shocking at times. But - as Richard Laymon was proneto do -the story is spoiled by the rushed ending. Another problem was Richard s need to add paranormal elements when none were needed.Librarian Jane receives a note signed by MOG (Master of Games) and a $50bill. Following the clue in the note leads her to another clue, and$100. Jane becomes caught up in the adrenalin rush, and the alwaysdoubled cash reward. When the clues lead her to dangerous places, I didlose connection with her. Most people would stop the `game way before shetries to.When she does try to quit MOG takes exception. I won t go into anymore detail and spoil the story, but let s just say MOG makes sure Jane has an incentive to keep playing. Now the hard part, the rating. For the most part `In The Dark is a gripping, can t-put-it-down read. Who is Mog and what are his/her motives? Readers will have fun trying to find the guilty party from the characters. But the ending... I was so disappointed, I have to take away a star.
In The Dark - We agree with ian d smith in that the characters are very real with all their flaws intact. We both found that we could not put this book down and eagerly awaited the next clues and identified with the main character in going ahead with her quest, as we stated with Island we feel this would be a good first book to ease someone into richard s style of horror writing.
A genius story teller - My first Richard Laymon I read and I did it in a day! Could not put it down - Looks like I came to races late, because I ve only just started to read his books, but he is a class act. His characters are real life people with all the flaws intact. This book reminded me of of a cross between the film s The Game and Saw . I could not put it down, as I have since discovered with his other books. Love the way he throws you straight into the story - No toe dipping here!
